Wedgetail Industries MPR Micro .223 REM – First Impressions Review

Australian shooters looking for a compact, lightweight, and highly capable rifle now have a new option to consider – the Wedgetail Industries MPR Micro chambered in .223 REM. I recently took the MPR Micro out for its very first range and field session, and in this review, I’ll share my initial thoughts, shooting impressions, and why this little rifle could quickly become a favourite for hunters, pest controllers, and anyone who spends long days carrying a rifle in the bush.

What is the Wedgetail MPR Micro?

The MPR Micro is the newest addition to Wedgetail’s proven MPR lineup. Based on the MPR Mini, the Micro trims things down further with a 13” barrel, 1:7 twist, and an overall length of just 760mm with the stock closed.

That makes it extremely compact – ideal for:

  • Getting in and out of vehicles or buggies

  • Navigating tight scrub and bushland

  • Carrying comfortably over long distances

Despite its small size, the rifle is built to the same high standards as the rest of the Wedgetail lineup, offering durability, accuracy, and modularity for Australian shooters.

Zeroing and Range Impressions

I started my session by zeroing the MPR Micro at 100m. Using a simple prone setup and tree stump rest, I was able to quickly get on paper and refine my point of impact. Within 15–20 rounds, the rifle was grouping consistently inside a small circle with only a couple of fliers – perfectly good for pest control work in the bush.

Even in windy conditions, the MPR Micro cycled smoothly and reliably. After finishing my paper zero, I sent the last few rounds onto steel, where it performed without a hiccup. The short barrel balances nicely, and despite being brand new, the action already felt slick.

Keeping It Lightweight – Accessories Setup

Because the Micro is designed to be compact, I wanted to keep the build light and practical. My setup included:

Initially, I considered running just a red dot to keep things ultra-minimal, but the new lightweight LPVO from ZeroTech felt like the perfect fit. It added versatility without throwing off the balance of the rifle.

Field Carry Test – Compact and Comfortable

After the range work, I carried the MPR Micro through the bush for a few hours of reconnaissance. This is where the rifle really impressed me.

Slung on a single point sling, it sat perfectly without knocking into my legs or snagging on obstacles. At under a metre in length, it’s an absolute pleasure to carry compared to a standard rifle. Whether climbing over logs, trekking long distances, or maneuvering through scrub, the Micro remained comfortable and unobtrusive.

For pest controllers and hunters who need to cover ground on foot, this is a major advantage.

Co-Host’s First Impressions

I handed the rifle over to my mate Sam for his take, and he was equally impressed. His words summed it up well: “I love how small it is, how compact and balanced it feels. The cycling is smooth, and honestly, I think I need to get one now.”

The fact that even with a full LPVO mounted it still carried so lightly speaks volumes about the rifle’s design.

Final Thoughts on the MPR Micro

While we didn’t connect with any feral pests on this trip, the first impressions of the Wedgetail Industries MPR Micro in .223 REM are outstanding. It’s smooth, lightweight, compact, and extremely practical for real-world use in the field.

Some key takeaways:

  • Compact design makes it perfect for vehicles, buggies, and bush carry

  • Lightweight build means less fatigue during long hunts

  • Accurate and reliable straight out of the box

  • Compatible with MPR Mini lowers – Micro uppers can be purchased separately

For Australian shooters already running an MPR Mini, the Micro offers a new level of modularity and versatility. For those looking for a compact, modern rifle platform for pest control or hunting, this one deserves serious consideration.

Stay tuned – I’ll be following up with a full accuracy review once I’ve had more time behind the rifle and put it through extended testing.
