For this review, I mounted the Trail 3 LRF XR50 to my WedgeTail Industries MPR Mini chambered in 300 Blackout, confirmed the zero, and then tested the laser rangefinder and ballistic calculator on steel targets out to 300 metres.

This was the part I was most interested in testing.

Using the Stream Vision Ballistics app, I uploaded my 300 Blackout load data before heading to the range.

Once configured, using the system is incredibly straightforward.

Simply:

  1. Laser the target.

  2. The Trail 3 instantly calculates the distance.

  3. The ballistic calculator displays an updated aiming point.

  4. Take the shot.

It really is that simple.

Real-World Accuracy Test

After confirming my zero at 100 metres, I moved onto steel targets positioned at approximately 200 metres and 300 metres.

The Trail 3 instantly ranged the targets and provided an updated aiming solution.

The result?

First-round impacts at 300 metres using a 300 Blackout.

Even more impressively, I followed that with four consecutive hits on steel at 300 metres.

Considering 300 metres is about the practical limit I'd personally use for supersonic 300 Blackout, that performance gave me a lot of confidence in both the laser rangefinder and the onboard ballistic calculations.

The system simply worked.

Thermal Image Quality

Image quality is excellent.

The combination of the 640 sensor and large 50mm objective produces a crisp image with plenty of detail, making target identification easy.

The Trail 3 also allows you to digitally zoom while maintaining a surprisingly usable image, particularly when engaging targets at longer distances.

Recording directly through the scope is another welcome feature, making it easy to capture hunts or review shots afterwards.

Lightweight Design for Hunting

One thing that became obvious during the practical drills was just how easy the Trail 3 is to carry and shoot with.

I ran several unsupported "raise and fire" drills, simulating spotting game while walking through the bush.

Despite being a premium thermal optic with an integrated rangefinder, the Trail 3 never felt bulky or awkward.

For hunters covering plenty of ground, that's a significant advantage.

Final Verdict

After spending time both on the bench and in the field, I came away seriously impressed with the Pulsar Trail 3 LRF XR50.

It's more than just another premium thermal scope. The combination of high-resolution imaging, an integrated laser rangefinder and reliable ballistic calculations genuinely speeds up target engagement and removes much of the guesswork involved in longer shots.

For hunters chasing pigs, foxes, wild dogs or other feral pests after dark, it's a feature set that offers real practical benefits rather than gimmicks.

The highlight for me was watching the Trail 3 consistently deliver accurate firing solutions and helping produce repeated hits on steel at 300 metres with a 300 Blackout.
